Nature as the Destination: Putting Nature-Positive Thinking at the Heart of Sustainable Tourism

THE CHALLENGE

Travel and tourism is among the economic sectors most deeply dependent on nature — more than 80% of its goods and services rely directly on biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Attention to sustainability in the sector has grown considerably, with science-based targets, third-party certification schemes such as the GSTC standard, and increasingly ambitious sustainability commitments from destinations and operators. But the shift from sustainable to genuinely nature-positive tourism requires a more rigorous framework: one that moves beyond minimising harm towards actively restoring the natural systems on which tourism depends. The Trentino region — and specifically Valsugana, the first destination in Italy to achieve GSTC certification in 2019 — offers an ideal test environment to develop, pilot, and refine the indicators and methodologies that can make nature-positive tourism a practical reality.

Sector-specific guidance:
Developing practical guidance for tourism operators, local authorities, and destination managers to implement nature-positive methods in their day-to-day operations.
