Youth Voices for a Nature-Positive Economy: A Fresh Perspective from Trinity College Students 1

Our youth voices for a nature-positive economy series, kicks off with a thought-provoking piece from Trinity College student Akinwande Majola, who was selected by our expert panel from outstanding student submissions. Students were asked to reflect on the GoNaturePositive! Concept Note that was published earlier this year to enable discussion on the framing for transitioning to a Nature-Positive Economy.

Brief on COP29 and the GoNaturePositive! agenda

COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, hosted crucial climate finance negotiations, resulting in developed nations pledging to mobilise $300 billion annually for developing countries. IKED represented GoNaturePositive!, participating in sessions on nature-based solutions and signing a key MoU with the West African Development Bank while broader discussions centred on reconciling economic growth with environmental protection.

Sustainable Smart Cities and a Nature-Positive Economy

At the Future of Climate Summit during UN Climate Week in NYC, experts discussed sustainable smart cities and urban transformation. The event focused on nature-based solutions, with IKED’s Ingrid Andersson highlighting the EU’s €1.2 billion Green Deal and introducing GoNaturePositive!

This land is your land, by Kieran Farrell

In March, Keiran Farrell joined GoNaturePositive!, a European Commission initiative working toward a nature-positive economy. The project brings together partners across Europe to first define what a nature-positive economy means, then develop a blueprint for market transformation to achieve this goal.

Linking Science – Policy – Society

In early June, IKED represented GoNaturePositive! at preparatory events in Baku for COP29. These sessions brought together experts from academia, industry, and business to shape workshop content, lead panels, and develop deliverables for the November 2024 climate conference.

Giving back to nature more than we take

At an April 2024 Brussels event hosted by Belgium’s EU Council Presidency, GoNaturePositive! consortium members Daniela Rizzi (ICLEI Europe) and Jomme Desair (INBO) participated in a Nature-Positive Roundtable supporting EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 goals for regenerative development.
